Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties:
- 1/2 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1/2 lb ground sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Burgers:
- 4 burger buns (brioche or potato buns recommended)
- 4 slices cheddar or American cheese
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon pickle relish
- 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
- 1/2 cup shredded lettuce
- 1/4 cup sliced pickles
- 1/4 cup crispy fried onions
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, mix the ground beef and sausage with salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide into 4 equal portions and roll into loose balls.
- Heat the Griddle or Skillet: Preheat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over high heat until smoking hot. Lightly grease with oil or butter.
- Smash the Patties: Place a meat ball onto the skillet, then use a spatula or burger press to smash it down as thin as possible. Cook for 2 minutes until crispy and browned. Flip, add a slice of cheese on top, and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Repeat with remaining patties.
- Toast the Buns: Spread butter on the buns and toast them in the same skillet until golden brown.
- Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, and hot sauce (if using).
- Assemble the Burgers: Spread sauce on both bun halves, then layer with shredded lettuce, pickles, a sausage smash patty, crispy fried onions, and the top bun.
- Serve & Enjoy: Serve immediately with fries, onion rings, or a side of coleslaw.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, press down again on the patties after flipping.
- Use spicy sausage for a bolder flavor, or breakfast sausage for a milder taste.
- Double up the patties for an even more indulgent burger.
