Description

Whole Grilled Mackerel is a flavorful and easy seafood dish marinated with garlic, ginger, and basil. This heart-healthy meal delivers crispy skin, tender meat, and bold taste—perfect for summer cookouts or weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 whole mackerel (680g900g each)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 34 fresh lemons

  • 2 tbsp (30g) minced garlic

  • 11.5 tbsp (15–22g) minced ginger

  • 12 tsp (2–4g) minced basil

  • 2 tsp chicken bouillon powder or Maggi (optional)

Instructions

  • Clean the Fish: Rinse the whole mackerel inside and out under cold water. Pat completely dry.

  • Score & Season: Cut 3–4 deep diagonal slits on each side of the fish. Season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.

  • Make Marinade: Mix garlic, ginger, basil, and bouillon (optional) into a paste using a bit of water or oil.

  • Marinate: Rub the paste all over and inside each fish. Marinate for 30 minutes or up to 24 hours in the fridge.

  • Prep Grill: Preheat grill. Oil a grill basket to prevent sticking. Discard any leftover marinade.

  • Grill: Place fish in basket. Grill over medium heat for 10 minutes per side until charred and flakes easily.

  • Serve: Serve hot with lemon wedges and your choice of sides.

Notes

Use a grill basket for easier flipping and to prevent sticking.

Overnight marination enhances flavor.

Internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C).

You can also bake the fish at 400°F for 20 minutes if needed.
