Whole Grilled Mackerel is a flavorful and easy seafood dish marinated with garlic, ginger, and basil. This heart-healthy meal delivers crispy skin, tender meat, and bold taste—perfect for summer cookouts or weeknight dinners.
Ingredients

2–3 whole mackerel (680g–900g each)

Salt and pepper, to taste

3–4 fresh lemons

2 tbsp (30g) minced garlic

1–1.5 tbsp (15–22g) minced ginger

1–2 tsp (2–4g) minced basil

2 tsp chicken bouillon powder or Maggi (optional)
Instructions

Clean the Fish: Rinse the whole mackerel inside and out under cold water. Pat completely dry.

Score & Season: Cut 3–4 deep diagonal slits on each side of the fish. Season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.

Make Marinade: Mix garlic, ginger, basil, and bouillon (optional) into a paste using a bit of water or oil.

Marinate: Rub the paste all over and inside each fish. Marinate for 30 minutes or up to 24 hours in the fridge.

Prep Grill: Preheat grill. Oil a grill basket to prevent sticking. Discard any leftover marinade.

Grill: Place fish in basket. Grill over medium heat for 10 minutes per side until charred and flakes easily.

Serve: Serve hot with lemon wedges and your choice of sides.
Notes
Use a grill basket for easier flipping and to prevent sticking.
Overnight marination enhances flavor.
Internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C).
You can also bake the fish at 400°F for 20 minutes if needed.
