Classic Shrimp Creole with tender shrimp simmered in a savory tomato-based Creole sauce.
Ingredients

- 2 tablespoons canola oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2–3 celery stalks, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Cajun or Creole seasoning
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 can tomato sauce (15 ounces)
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- Tabasco sauce, to taste
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- Lemon wedges
- Cooked rice
Instructions
- Heat oil and butter in a skillet.
- Cook onion, bell pepper, and celery until very soft.
- Add garlic, seasonings, thyme, cayenne, and bay leaf.
- Stir in tomato sauce, water, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Simmer until sauce thickens.
- Add shrimp and cook until just firm.
- Season with hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Remove bay leaf and garnish with parsley.
Notes
- Bloom spices in hot fat for deeper flavor.
- Prepare sauce ahead and add shrimp before serving.
- Reheat gently to avoid overcooking shrimp.
