Description

Classic Shrimp Creole with tender shrimp simmered in a savory tomato-based Creole sauce.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 23 celery stalks, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun or Creole seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15 ounces)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • Tabasco sauce, to taste
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Lemon wedges
  • Cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Heat oil and butter in a skillet.
  2. Cook onion, bell pepper, and celery until very soft.
  3. Add garlic, seasonings, thyme, cayenne, and bay leaf.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, water, and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer until sauce thickens.
  6. Add shrimp and cook until just firm.
  7. Season with hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
  8. Remove bay leaf and garnish with parsley.

Notes

  1. Bloom spices in hot fat for deeper flavor.
  2. Prepare sauce ahead and add shrimp before serving.
  3. Reheat gently to avoid overcooking shrimp.
