Description

Classic creamy Potato Gratin with layers of tender potatoes baked in a rich Gruyère cheese sauce until golden and bubbling.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 1½ cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • Pinch nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Cook onion in butter until soft.
  3. Add garlic and thyme.
  4. Whisk in flour.
  5. Add milk and cook until thickened.
  6. Stir in 1/2 cup cheese.
  7. Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper.
  8. Layer potatoes with sauce.
  9. Top with remaining cheese.
  10. Bake 45 to 60 minutes.
  11. Rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  1. Use heavy cream for a richer sauce.
  2. Try cheddar, Swiss, Havarti or Parmesan.
  3. Russet and Yukon Gold potatoes both work well.
  4. Add cooked bacon for extra flavor.
