It’s the perfect party food, easy to make in under 40 minutes, and guaranteed to vanish fast from any snack table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Italian loaf, sliced lengthwise

  • 4 tablespoons (57 g) salted butter, softened

  • 3 teaspoons (15 g) garlic powder, divided

  • 1 pound (450 g) lean ground beef

  • 1 cup (150 g) diced yellow onion

  • 1 cup (150 g) diced green bell pepper

  • 1 cup (240 ml) low-sodium beef broth

  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon (8 g) cornstarch

  • 1 teaspoon (3 g) onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon (2 g) kosher salt

  • ½ teaspoon (1 g) black pepper

  • 12 slices of provolone cheese

  • Optional: 2 tablespoons chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment.

  2. Slice loaf lengthwise and place on baking sheet. Spread with butter and sprinkle with 2 tsp garlic powder.

  3. Cook ground beef in a skillet until browned. Drain if needed.

  4. Add onions and peppers; sauté until softened.

  5. In a bowl, whisk broth, ketchup, Worcestershire, cornstarch, onion powder, remaining garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  6. Pour sauce into skillet and cook until thickened, 5–7 minutes.

  7. Spoon beef mixture over bread halves and top with provolone.

  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

  9. Garnish with parsley, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

Substitute ground beef with shredded steak or plant-based crumbles.

Add mushrooms, jalapeños, or red pepper flakes for variation.

Prep beef filling ahead for quicker assembly.

Freeze unbaked assembled bread, and bake from frozen when ready.

Best served warm with salad or potato sides.
