Description

These homemade Orange Cream Scones are flaky, buttery, and packed with fresh orange flavor. Finished with a sweet orange glaze, they make a perfect breakfast or brunch treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Extra heavy cream for brushing
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest in a bowl.
  3. Cut cold butter into the mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  4. Whisk egg, sour cream, heavy cream, and vanilla extract together.
  5. Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients until just combined.
  6. Shape dough into a one inch thick circle and cut into eight wedges.
  7. Place wedges on baking sheet and brush tops with heavy cream.
  8. Bake for 15 to 16 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Whisk melted butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, orange juice, and orange zest together for glaze.
  10. Drizzle glaze over slightly cooled scones before serving.

Notes

  1. Use cold butter for flaky layers.
  2. Fresh orange zest gives the strongest flavor.
  3. Do not overmix the dough.
  4. Add extra powdered sugar if glaze feels thin.
