Description

This Homemade Shepherd’s Pie features a savory beef and vegetable filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes and melted cheddar cheese.


Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, finely diced
  • 2 celery sticks, finely diced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground paprika
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons white flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ⅓ cup red wine or beef broth
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • ½ teaspoon chopped thyme
  • 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Chop all vegetables and prepare mashed potatoes.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet and brown the ground beef.
  3. Add garlic, onions, carrots, and celery and cook until soft.
  4. Season with salt, paprika, and black pepper.
  5. Stir in flour and tomato paste until combined.
  6. Add wine or broth and simmer briefly.
  7. Pour in beef broth and cook until thickened.
  8. Stir in peas and herbs.
  9. Transfer filling to a baking dish.
  10. Spread mashed potatoes over the top.
  11. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese.
  12. Bake until golden and bubbling.

Notes

  1. Use freshly mashed potatoes for best texture.
  2. Let the filling cool slightly before topping.
  3. Taste and adjust seasoning before baking.
