Ingredients
For the Bread:
-
3 cups All-purpose flour
-
2 teaspoons Active dry yeast
-
1 tablespoon Sugar
-
1 teaspoon Salt
-
1 cup Warm water (about 100°F or 38°C)
-
2 tablespoons Butter or oil (melted)
Optional Add-ins for Flavor Variations:
-
1 tablespoon Dried herbs (rosemary, thyme, or oregano)
-
½ cup Sunflower or sesame seeds
-
½ cup Dried fruits (raisins, cranberries, or apricots)
Instructions
-
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of warm water with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast over the water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it bubbles and foams.
-
Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine 3 cups of flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Make a well in the center, pour in the yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Stir with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms.
-
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a clean surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If sticky, add a little flour. If too dry, add a bit of water.
-
First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
-
Shape the Loaves: Punch down the dough, divide it into two portions (for two loaves), and shape into loaves. Place them into greased loaf pans.
-
Second Rise: Let the dough rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until puffed up.
-
Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Tap the bottom of the loaves—if it sounds hollow, it’s done. Cool on a wire rack.
Notes
Add herbs or seeds for extra flavor and texture.
For a richer flavor, use whole wheat flour or a combination of whole wheat and all-purpose flour.
