Ingredients
-
2 cups all-purpose flour
-
1/3 cup granulated sugar
-
1.5 teaspoons baking powder
-
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
-
1/2 cup salted butter, cold and cubed
-
1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk + lemon juice)
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
1 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
In a large mixing bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
-
Add cold butter cubes and cut into the flour using fingers or a pastry cutter until crumbly.
-
Pour in buttermilk and vanilla. Stir just until combined.
-
Gently knead the dough until it comes together—do not overmix.
-
Fold in chocolate chips by hand.
-
Shape into an 8-inch disc on the baking sheet and cut into 8 wedges. Slightly separate them.
-
Bake for 18–25 minutes until golden at the edges.
-
Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
Keep butter and milk cold for best texture.
Overmixing can make the scones tough—handle gently.
Add a milk wash and sugar sprinkle for a glossy, bakery-style finish.
To substitute buttermilk, mix 1/2 cup milk with 1/2 tbsp lemon juice and rest 5 min.
Freeze baked or unbaked for up to 2 months.
