Description

These Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes are creamy, rich, and comforting, made with thinly sliced potatoes layered with garlic cream, cheddar, and parmesan, then baked until tender and golden.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups freshly grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
  • 3 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly to about 1/8 inch thick.
  3. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat and add the garlic, cooking briefly until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the cream, salt, and pepper and heat until just beginning to boil, then remove from heat.
  5. Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish and pour over half of the cream mixture.
  6. Sprinkle with half of the cheddar and parmesan cheeses.
  7. Repeat the layers, finishing with cheese on top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake an additional 25 to 35 minutes until potatoes are tender.
  10. Let rest 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  1. Use a mandoline for even potato slices.
  2. Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded.
  3. Let the dish rest briefly before serving for cleaner slices.
