Description

Cheese Savoury is a creamy, crunchy, tangy British sandwich filling made with mature cheddar, carrot, red onion, and salad cream. This retro vegetarian classic is perfect for quick lunches, picnics, or tea-time sandwiches—no cooking required, and it tastes even better the next day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 250g (8.8 oz) grated extra mature or vintage Cheddar cheese

  • 1 large carrot, peeled and grated

  • 1 large red onion, peeled and grated

  • Salad cream (add a spoonful by spoonful until creamy)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine grated cheddar, grated carrot, and grated red onion.

  2. Add salad cream a spoon at a time, mixing thoroughly, until the mixture is creamy and spreadable.

  3. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.

  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours to allow flavors to develop.

  5. Use as a sandwich filling for eight sandwiches or soft rolls.

Notes

Finer grating creates a smoother texture.

Don’t skip chilling—it enhances flavor.

Add-ins like mustard, chives, or hot sauce can create new variations.

For crunch, pair with cucumber slices or pickles.

Best enjoyed within 5 days; not freezer-friendly.
