Description

This creamy cheese sauce is the ultimate partner for warm pretzels and snack-time cravings. Made with pantry staples, it’s quick, rich, and full of bold flavor from sharp cheddar, spicy mustard, and a hint of Worcestershire. Perfect for dipping, drizzling, or devouring by the spoonful.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon (14 g) unsalted butter

  • 1 tablespoon (8 g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk, plus more as needed

  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) spicy brown mustard

  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ teaspoon (1.5 g) garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon (3 g) salt

  • 2 cups (170 g) shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

  • Whisk in the flour to form a thick paste and stir for 30–60 seconds.

  • Slowly whisk in the milk. Add mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and salt.

  • Stir continuously for 3–4 minutes until thickened and bubbling.

  • Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheese gradually until melted.

  • If the sauce gets too thick, add a splash of warm milk to loosen it.

Notes

Use freshly shredded cheese for the smoothest melt.

Keep heat moderate to avoid grainy texture.

Store leftovers in the fridge up to 4 days or freeze for later.

Reheat slowly with added milk for the best consistency.

Serve with soft pretzels, chips, veggies, nachos, or baked potatoes.
