Description

A warm Southern caramel peach cobbler made with canned peaches, buttery crisp topping, cinnamon, vanilla, and a rich syrupy peach filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 29-ounce cans peaches in heavy syrup, using syrup from only 1 can
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, adjusted to taste
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 small pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Pour one full can of peaches with its syrup into a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Drain the second can of peaches and add only the peaches to the baking dish.
  4. Add 5 tablespoons melted butter, lemon juice, vanilla extract, 1/4 cup sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon salt to the peaches.
  5. Stir gently until the peaches and syrup combine.
  6. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, 1 1/2 cups sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  7. Sprinkle the flour mixture evenly over the peaches.
  8. Smooth the flour mixture gently with clean fingers or the back of a spoon, but do not press it into the peaches.
  9. Drizzle 1 cup melted butter evenly over the flour topping.
  10. Bake for 15 minutes at 400°F.
  11. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F and bake for about 1 hour, or until the topping turns crisp and golden brown.
  12. Let the cobbler cool for 30 to 60 minutes before serving.
  13. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Notes

  1. Use the syrup from only one can of peaches so the filling does not turn too loose.
  2. For fresh peaches, use firm ripe peaches, slice them thickly, and adjust sugar to taste.
  3. Do not press the flour topping into the fruit because the crust may turn dense.
  4. Bake until the top looks golden brown and crisp.
  5. Cover leftovers and store at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
