Ingredients

Scale

For the Black Sesame Batter:

  • 1 cup black sesame seeds

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Vanilla Batter:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste (or seeds from 1 vanilla pod)

For Decorating (optional):

  • Whipped cream

  • Black sesame seeds

  • Fresh berries (raspberries or strawberries)

Instructions

  • Toast the black sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat for 3–4 minutes until fragrant. Let them cool slightly, then grind into a fine paste.

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

  • For the black sesame batter, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.

  • Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk into the butter mixture until combined.

  • Fold in the black sesame paste until evenly blended.

  • For the vanilla batter, repeat the same steps, adding vanilla bean paste for flavor.

  • Spoon both batters alternately into the prepared pans. Swirl gently with a knife to create a marbled pattern.

  • Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • Cool cakes for 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

  • Layer with whipped cream if desired, decorate with black sesame seeds and berries, then slice and serve.

Notes

Toasting the sesame seeds enhances depth and aroma.

Avoid over-swirling to maintain a distinct marbled pattern.

Serve with green tea or espresso for a refined pairing.
