Description
Tender cinnamon apples bake beneath a buttery brown sugar oat topping in this easy American apple crisp. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for a cozy fall dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
- 5 cups fresh apples, peeled if desired and evenly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Butter or nonstick cooking spray for the baking dish
- Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a deep-dish pie plate or medium baking dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray.
- Core the apples and slice them evenly into pieces about 1/2 inch wide.
- Place the sliced apples in a large bowl. Add the granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
- Toss the apples until evenly coated, then spread them in the prepared baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, salt, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
- Pour the melted butter into the oat mixture and stir until moist crumbs form.
- Sprinkle the topping loosely and evenly over the apples without pressing it down.
- Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, until the apple juices bubble and the topping turns golden brown.
- Test a thick apple slice with a knife. If the topping browns before the apples soften, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil.
- Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce.
Notes
- Cut the apples into uniform slices so they bake at the same rate.
- Use firm apples such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Braeburn, or a combination.
- If the topping browns too quickly, cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil.
- Add 1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for extra crunch, unless you need a nut-free dessert.
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to four days.
- Reheat leftovers in a 350°F oven or toaster oven for 10 to 15 minutes for a crisper topping.
- Freeze the baked apple crisp for up to three months and thaw it overnight before reheating.
