Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Add apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg.
  4. Cook for 5 minutes until apples begin softening.
  5. Transfer apple filling into prepared baking dish.
  6. Whisk melted butter and sugar together in a bowl.
  7. Add buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  8. Whisk in flour, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  9. Pour batter evenly over the apples.
  10. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the topping.
  11. Bake for 48 to 55 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  12. Cool slightly before serving warm.
