Description

Apple and Cranberry Grilled Cheese is a gourmet twist on a classic comfort food. This sandwich blends sweet apples, tart cranberries, and rich, melty cheese between crisp slices of golden bread. It’s the perfect balance of sweet and savory, making it an easy but elegant meal for any time of day.


Ingredients

  • 2 slices sourdough, whole grain, or brioche bread

  • 23 slices sharp cheddar, brie, or Gruyère cheese

  • 1/2 apple, thinly sliced (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala)

  • 12 tbsp whole berry or jellied cranberry sauce

  • 1 tbsp butter (for bread or pan)

  • Optional: a handful of arugula, caramelized onions, or apple butter


Instructions

  • Butter the Bread: Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.

  • Assemble: On the unbuttered side, layer half of the cheese, then add apple slices and a spoonful of cranberry sauce. Add any optional extras, then top with remaining cheese and second slice of bread (buttered side out).

  • Cook: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the sandwich in the pan and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, until golden brown and the cheese has melted.

  • Serve: Cut in half, plate, and enjoy with a light salad or warm soup.

Notes

You can use pre-sliced bread for convenience, but thick artisan bread holds up better.

For a vegan version, use dairy-free cheese and plant-based butter.

Try adding a little whole grain mustard or apple butter inside for extra flavor.
