Description

Fresh apple sticks are coated in cinnamon-sugar panko breadcrumbs and air-fried until golden and crisp outside while staying tender inside. Serve them warm with caramel sauce, yogurt, or whipped cream for an easy family-friendly dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples, preferably Honeycrisp or Granny Smith
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Caramel sauce, yogurt, or whipped cream for serving, optional

Instructions

  1. Wash, core, and cut the apples into fry-shaped sticks about 1/2 inch thick. Peel the apples first if desired.
  2. Pat the apple sticks thoroughly dry with paper towels.
  3. Place the flour in the first shallow bowl.
  4. Whisk the egg and milk together in a second shallow bowl.
  5. Mix the panko breadcrumbs, granulated sugar, and cinnamon in a third shallow bowl.
  6. Coat each apple stick in flour and shake off the excess.
  7. Dip each floured apple stick into the egg mixture and let the excess drip off.
  8. Press each apple stick into the cinnamon-sugar panko mixture until coated on every side.
  9. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F if required by the appliance.
  10. Lightly spray the air fryer basket and the coated apple fries with nonstick cooking spray.
  11. Arrange the apple fries in a single layer, working in batches when necessary.
  12. Air fry for 7 to 9 minutes, shaking the basket or turning the fries halfway through.
  13. Remove the fries when the coating looks golden and crisp.
  14. Let the fries rest for 2 minutes, then serve warm with caramel sauce, yogurt, or whipped cream.

Notes

  1. Cut the apple sticks evenly so they cook at the same rate.
  2. Pat the apples dry so the breading sticks properly.
  3. Do not crowd the air fryer basket because trapped steam can soften the coating.
  4. Check the fries near the 7-minute mark because air fryer models vary.
  5. Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  6. Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes.
